O Mi Shango

A 8 track house single (44m 54s) — released June 6th 2011 on Sunlightsquare Records

Hold tight! - As Sunlightsquare band leader Claudio Passavanti unleashes the 2nd single from his gigantic recording album venture - 'Britannia Shing-A-Ling'. Recorded at Studio Miloco Studios, London, Claudio enlisted 25 musicians and vocalists (A BIG BAND!) to take part in this phenomenal live album project. Following their first single release, 'Land OF 1000 Dances', taken from the album, Sunlightsquare roll out the Afro-Cuban vibes covering Cuban Latin jazz percussionist Mongo Santamaria's 1976 smash 'O Mi Shango'. Featuring lead vocals from Rene Alvarez, mixes on the package include an earthy, Cuban jazztastic original mix along with a selection of latin fuzed dancefloor grooves from NY's Franke Estevez & George Mena (Fuzion), Brazilian resident Mustafa, UK house producer David Doyle and a Liberation mix from Sunlightsquare. Hola!!.. The Sunlightsquare Summertime party bus has arrived!!

Sunlightsquare are one of the most exciting acts to hit the London Jazz scene in recent years. A multi genre crossing band, who fuse Latin, nu-jazz, soul, reggaeton, funk and Salsa inspired music to create beautiful innovative grooves. They first started recording together in 2004, releasing their debut album 'Urban Session' in 2006 on their own label Sunlightsquare Records. Sunlightsquare is the brainchild of talented Italian pianist and composer Claudio Passavanti, who cherry picks only the best world-class musicians and vocalists to collaborate on his various projects. 2009 saw the launch of their fantastic album 'Urban Latin Soul' which reached great acclaim, topped off with a sell-out album launch show at London's Jazz Cafe. Their singles, including a cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' (ft Z Star) & the latin fuelled 'Amuyada' (Ft Joy Malcom). The band have won support all over the globe from top jocks including Gilles Peterson, Craig Charles, Joey Negro, Louie Vega and many many more! 2010 saw Claudio head to Cuba forming Sunlightsquare Latin Combo to record the highly acclaimed 'Havana Central' Album working with features the crème de la crème of musicians from the Latin world of music including: Lazaro Antonio Rodríguez, Giovanni Imparato, Ignacio R. "El Chispa" Cervantes, Rayhner Lasserie, Luis Amaurys Leyva Suárez, Yanko Pizaco & Alexander Valdés Sarduy,Yamil Rivero Cárdenas & Joel Sagó Bell among others. This also featured the huge salsa-centric cover of the The Jackson Sister's classic 'I Believe In Miracles' single and 'Para Guarachar' making it to the Traxsource No.1 post on the Best of 2010 Afro/Latin/Brazilian chart.

Sunlightsquare's 'Britannia Shing-A-Ling' album, is a project including a massive line up of 21 + musicians : 1 drums, 1 bass, 3 percussion, 7 horns, 1 flute, 1 vibraphone, 1 keyboards, 6 singers and + a string section. The whole album was recorded live, executed following the same technique typical of Fania/Motown/Staxx sounds, where all parts were written and performed all at once with just strings overdubbing and no editing whatsoever! This took a painstaking 6 month process of re-arranging, re-orchestrating and remixing prior to recording. 'Britannia Shing-A-Ling' sees Claudio dig out some of his favourite vinyls from the 60's & 70's identifying the common afro-cuban link uniting all Soul, Blues and Latin Music. Together Sunlightsquare re-create the classics, basing all rhythms around the Clave - the core rhythmic pattern of most Cuban and Latin grooves. The band includes : Ernesto Simpson, Giovanni Imparato, Dave Patman, Vicky Jassey, Emanuele Brignola, Tasita DʼMour, Sharlene Hector, Vanessa Freeman, Kevin Mark Trail, Rene Alvarez, Brendan Reilly, Gareth Lockrane, Quentin Collins, Massimo Creco, Donato Sensini, Brandon Allen, T ony Kofi, Trevor Mires, Nichol Thomson, Jim Hart and the Solis String Quartet.
